Discovering you’re pregnant as a high school student can feel like your world just shifted, and you don’t have to face that alone. You have rights, support, and options, and we’re here to help you navigate them.
At Vie Medical Clinic, we offer free, confidential services and a caring team ready to walk with you as you consider your next steps.
Your Educational Rights Under Title IX
One of the first questions you may have is how pregnancy will affect school. Title IX, a federal civil rights law, protects students from discrimination based on pregnancy or parenting status.
Understanding your rights can help you stay focused on your education without fear of being treated unfairly.
- You can continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities. Your school cannot bar you from advanced placement and honors classes, school clubs, sports, or other activities just because you’re pregnant or parenting.
- Pregnancy-related absences must be excused. If your doctor recommends time away, your school is required to excuse those absences. When you return, you must be allowed to rejoin classes and activities at the same academic level as before.
- You’re entitled to reasonable adjustments. If you need adjustments, such as a larger desk, elevator access, rest breaks, or homebound instruction, your school must provide them if it offers similar support to students with temporary medical conditions.
Importantly, your school cannot pressure you into alternative programs or punish you for being pregnant.
Your Medical and Emotional Health Matter
Caring for your health is just as crucial as protecting your education. Early support gives you the information you need and space to think through your options at your own pace.
